Yangon also known as Rangoon, literally : "End of Strife") is a former capital of Burma (Myanmar) and the capital of Yangon Region. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006, Yangon, with a population of over 5 million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial centre.
          Although Yangon's infrastructure is undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia, it has the largest number of colonial buildings in the region today. While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.

Climate

Yangon has a tropical monsoon climate. The city features a lengthy rainy season from May through October where a substantial amount of rainfall is received; and a dry season from November through April, where little rainfall is seen. It is primarily due to the heavy precipitation received during the rainy season that Yangon falls under the tropical monsoon climate category. During the course of the year, average temperatures show little variance, with average highs ranging from 29 to 36°C (84 to 97°F) and average lows ranging from 18 to 25°C (64 to 77 °F).

1. The Shwedagon Pagoda also known in English as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is a gilded pagoda and stupa 99 metres (325 ft) in height that is located in Yangon, Burma. The pagoda lies to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, on Singuttara Hill, thus dominating the skyline of the city. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese with relics of four past Buddhas enshrined within: the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Koṇāgamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa and eight strands of hair from Gautama. Uppatasanti Pagoda is an exact replica of Shwedagon Pagoda in Naypyidaw, the capital of Burma.

2. Kandawgyi Garden or Kandawgyi Nature Park is a popular recreation centre of the capital of Yangon. The area of the Garden is 110 acres, water areas is 150 acres, which makes it a total of 260 acres. You can find a variety of beautiful flowers, the natural scene of the lake water and large shady trees. There are also an orchid garden, the children play-ground, Mini Zoo, the souvenir shops and many restaurants. The playgrounds and picnic areas are favourite spots for children and teenagers. The beauty of Karaweik Hall also shows a unique work of art to be explored in the heart of Kandawgyi Lake. Kandawgyi meaning "the great lake" in Myanmar is a well-known place in Yangon.

3. Hlawaga National Park is a national park located in Mingaladon, Yangon Division, Myanmar, 22 miles (35 km) north of Yangon. The 1540-acre (623-hectare) park includes an 818-acre wildlife park, a 62-acre mini-zoo and a 660-acre buffer zone. First established as an environmental education center in 1982, the national park is a popular day-trip destination with Yangonites and ecotourists.

Wild life park is home to various types of deer independent living in zoo (Barking deer, hog deer, eld's deer, sambar deer) Their natural habitats consists of semi-evergreen forests, mixed deciduous forests, and swamp forests. According to a 1992 survey, the park was home to at least 21 species of mammals, 145 species of birds and 8 species of reptiles. Bird : Pale-capped Pigeon (possible in winter), Hooded Pitta, Blue-winged Pitta (only rainy season), Jungle Fowl, Red-vented Bulbul, Lesser Whistling Duck, Asian Openbill Stork, Black-crowned Night Heron, Brahminy Kite, Asian Koel, Commn Tailorbird and more 90 specie.

4. The Yangon Zoological Gardens (Yangon Zoo) is the oldest and the second largest zoo in Myanmar. Located immediately north of downtown Yangon near Kandawgyi Lake, recreational park also includes a museum of natural history, an aquarium and an amusement park. Wildlife in Zoo : 51 species of mammals, 70 species of birds and species of repitles, amounting to over 136 species are kept. In addition, Asiatic Elephant, Hippopatamus, Camel, Tiger, Otter, Various species of monkeys. The zoo draws nearly 2.2 million visitors annually. The zoo was operated by the Forest Department under the Ministry of Forestry until April 2011, and is now operated by a private firm. Yangon Zoo is open from 8 am to 6 pm daily.

Transport

Yangon is Burma's main domestic and international hub for air, rail, and ground transportation.
Yangon International Airport, located 12 miles (19 km) from downtown, is the country's main gateway for domestic and international air travel. It has direct flights to regional cities in Asia – mainly, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul, Guangzhou, Taipei, Bangkok Thailand , Kuala Lumpur, Kunming and Singapore. Although domestic airlines offer service to about twenty domestic locations, most flights are to tourist destinations such as Bagan, Mandalay, Heho and Myeikand to the capital Naypyidaw.
