Daily report

Day 1 (20.12.14): Beijing airport and flight to Chiang Mai
Our flight arrived at 7am at Beijing airport. The connecting flight being 10 hours later, we took a free 72 hours visa to get out of the airport for some birding. We found a small park with some bushes and trees just south-west of the terminal 3. We found there our first birds like Siberian Accentor, White-cheeked Starling, Yellow-bellied Tit, Grey-capped Greenfinch, Light-vented Bulbul.
After that we got back to the airport for our flight to Chiang Mai. We arrived at Chiang Mai at 11pm. Our guide Panuwat Sasirat (Par) and the driver Ton were waiting for us. They brought us to the hotel B2, 10 minutes from the airport.

Day 2 (21.12.14): Chiang Mai, Mae Hiab and travel to Doi Inthanon
Our first birding day in Thailand. The first hour in the morning was spent around the hotel, where we saw our first common birds like Taiga Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Warbler, Coppersmith Barbet and Streak-eared Bulbul. After driving for 10 minutes, we found some Crested Treeswifts sitting on wires in the middle of the city. Then we moved towards the Mae Hiab area. Our first stop was made around a couple of ponds. We saw there Wire-tailed Swallow, Thick-billed Warbler, Red Adavat, Yellow Bittern, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Dusky Warbler, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, White-breasted Waterhen. We also found in the bushes around the ponds a Lesser Whitethroat, as far as we know the 5th record for Thailand! We moved then towards an open area of fields, trees. The first interesting bird was a Spotted Owlet found by Par. Then we saw some other interesting species: Burmese, Long-tailed, Brown and Grey-backed Shrikes, Plain-backed Sparrow, Indochinese Bush lark, Plain Prinia, Paddyfield Pipit, Banded Bay Cuckoo and Shikra. In the forest area along those fields, we saw Arctic, Radde’s and Yellow-streaked Warblers, Lineated Barbet, Crested Honey-Buzzard, Crested Serpent-Eagle and Green-billed Malkoha.
After that, we drove 2 hours to enter the Doi Inthanon National Park. On the way, we did a stop on the foothills, finding easily Blossom-headed Parakeet. After this, we went birding in the dry dipterocarpic forest inside the park. We found in 1 hour a pair of White-rumped Pygmy-Falcon, a few Collared Falconets, Large Cuckooshrike, Scarlet Minivet, Black-napped Oriole, Black-napped Monarch and Rufous-winged Buzzard.
We did the next stop close to a rapid stream up in the national park. We found there Black-backed Forktail, Hume’s Leaf-Warbler, Chestnut-flanked, Japanese and Oriental White-Eye, Yellow-bellied Warbler and our first Verditer Flycatcher.
The next stop in the park was close to a second stream inside a forest, where we saw Plumbeous Water Redstart, Slaty-backed Forktail, Yellow-bellied Fantail. We set up the camp at 5pm. at the Ton Son Campsite. We birded around the campsite until darkness and saw Two-barred Warbler, Slaty-blue and Blue-throated Blue Flycatcher, Grey Bushchat and Cinereous Tit.

Day 3 (22.12.14): Doi Inthanon National Park
We spent the first hour birdwatching around the campsite. The pond adjacent to the area is a good place to find Black-tailed Crake. We heard one bird but couldn’t find it in the dense vegetation. Around this pond we saw Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Rufous-fronted Babbler, many warblers in a big flock: Sulphur-breasted, Two-barred, Eastern crowned and Chinese Leaf. We also had Hill Prinia in dense vegetation.
After this, we went up the mountain to the second checkpoint of the National Park. There we walked on a few hundred meters along the road, finding many good birds such as Brown-cheeked and Rufous-winged Fulvettas, Mountain and Flavescent Bulbuls, White-throated Fantail, Short-billed and Grey-chinned Minivet, Blyth’s Leaf Warbler, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Dark-backed and Rufous-backed Sibia, Spectacled Barwing, Yellow-cheeked Tit.
We then went up to the top mountain of the National Park. Many birds were feeding just under the restaurant on old food rests, including Chestnut-tailed Minla, Rufous-throated Partridge, Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush and on flowers Mr. Gould’s and Green-tailed Sunbird (of the local ‘angkanensis’ endemic subspecies). We went down a trail inside the forest and we found there Pygmy Wren-Babbler, Ashy-throated and Davison’s Leaf-Warbler, the scarce Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker, two males Snowy-browed Flycatchers and a skulking Dark-sided Thrush. Around the parking we saw our first Golden-throated Barbet, Yellow-browed Tits and Yunnan (or Grey-cheeked) Fulvettas.
We went down the mountain to go birding and lunch in a pine forest, where we saw Velvet-fronted Nuthatchs, Blyth’s Shrike-Babblers and on flowering trees a few Black-throated Sunbirds.
We went to an area to take a trail to a waterfall (which could have been good for Forktails, but we couldn’t find any). On this trail and around the waterfall we saw some Little Spiderhunters, Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, Grey-throated Babbler, Grey-crowned Warbler, Dusky Crag Martin, White-browed Piculet, White-bellied Erpornis, a female Siberian Blue Robin, our first Asian Brown Flycatcher, Blue-winged Leafbird, Puff-throated Bulbul and an adult Rufous-bellied Eagle flying over us.
We changed spot and went birding along the road, where we saw White-gorgeted Flycatcher, Silver-eared Mesia, Hume‘s Treecreeper, Rufous-bellied, Small and Large Niltava, a good flock Spot-winged Grosbeak, Long-tailed Minivet, Ashy Bulbul, Eyebrowed Thrushs and Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher.
On the evening we tried to find Frogmouths but couldn’t find any. Over the campsite were singing many Asian Barred Owlets.

Day 4 (23.12.14): Doi Inthanon National Park and travel to Doi Ang Khang
We started the day by birding around the campsite, where we could find many good species. We again heard Black-tailed Crake but couldn’t find it. Around the pond we saw many birds : Little Pied and Slaty-backed Flycatchers, Buff-breasted Babbler, Chestnut-fronted Shrike Babbler, a few Greenish and Pallas’s Leaf Warblers, Indochinese Cuckooshrike, Blue Rock Thrush and we had good views of a Besra sitting low in a tree.
We went again to the second checkpoint where we found along the road White-browed Shortwing, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Pale-legged Leaf Warbler, Golden Babblers. Inside the second checkpoint trail we could find around 5 Slaty-bellied Tesias.
We moved then slowly towars Doi Ang Khang. On the way we saw a few Dark-rumped Swifts. On the foothills we had good views of a dark morph Booted Eagle, apparently rare in Thaïland (which was a new bird for Par!). We will see 2 Booted Eagles during the trip.
We arrived at dusk at the Ban Luang Resort, inside Doi Ang Khang, where we settled up our tent. Just before night we saw a couple White-browed Scimitar Babblers, Spot-necked Babbler and Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush.

Day 5 (24.12.14): Doi Ang Khang (DAK)
We started birding 30 minutes around the resort and saw Crested Finchbills, Black and Brown-breasted Bulbuls. We then moved towards the rubbish dump of DAK and found many birds in the dump itself and in bushes around: Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrike, Grey Treepie, Bronzed Drongo, a male Daurian Redstart, White-browed Laughingthrushs. We went then a bit down inside a forest trail and found a Speckled Piculet and Striated Bulbuls. At the top mountain, inside the pine forest, we found Stripe-breasted Woodpecker, a few Buff-throated Warblers and Blue-winged Minlas.
After lunch, we went inside the King project and saw Black-breasted Thrushs, Rufous-bellied Niltava and White-tailed Robins. We then went out of the King project and went by foot for 2 hours along a forest trail. We saw there Mountain Tailorbirds, Bianchi’s Warblers, Streaked Wren Babblers, Maroon Oriole, Grey-eyed Bulbul and Burmese Nuthatch. We flushed inside the forest a Scaly Thrush, which we couldn’t find anymore after.
On late afternoon we went back to the resort to try to find White-capped Redstart, which we found quite easily by the waterfall. We then went back to the rubbish dump, where we saw new birds such as Northern Goshawk, Black-headed Greenfinch, Grey-winged Blackbird, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler and a skulking Aberrant Bush Warbler in the high grass surrounding the area.

Day 6 (25.12.14): Doi Ang Khang and travell to Doi San Ju
We started the day by birdwatching a few minuts at the campsite, where we found 2 Ashy Wood Pigeons. We went up towards the pine forest and saw a flying Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, some Spot-breasted Parrotbill and Vivid Niltava. We went to the rubbish dump and saw again many birds: Great Barbets, Crested Goshawk, Siberian Rubythroat, a female/first-winter White-bellied Redstart and a Buff-barred Warbler.
After this, we moved towards Doi San Ju. On the foothills we found Greater Coucal and Rufescent Prinia.
We settled up the camp at the Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park. We birded 1 hour around the campsite and found a female Asian Emerald Cuckoo sitting for long minuts high in a tree, Black-capped Kingfisher, Plain Flowerpecker and Blue-eared Barbets.
Then we went up to Doi San Ju for birding. On the way we found a few Blue-bearded Bee-eaters and Asian Koel. At Doi San Ju, we did road birding and saw Golden-fronted Leafbird, Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers, Rosy Minivet, Oriental Turtel Dove and Crested Bunting. We had again good views of a female White-bellied Redstart. At the top, from the car, we heard the typical calls of Giant Nuthatch and had very good views of 2 birds. In the bushes and pines, good numbers of Pallas’s Leaf Warbler. Suddently, a good mix flock of Sibias and Minlas appeared. Inside this flock, we saw first very briefly a bird with many bars on his belly, many colours and short tail. First we didn’t realized what it was, but then had bether views of this bird: Himalayan Cutia! What an awesome bird! It was only the second Cutia for our guide Par. For sure one of the birds of the trip! We went down the hill towards our campsite. 

Day 7 (26.12.14): Doi San Ju and travell to the campsite before Doi Lang
We woke up early to be at first light on the top of Doi San Ju, to try to find Mrs Hume’s Pheasant. After 1 hour without any birds, we suddently found a nice male of this species very close and had good views during 15 minuts. The bird was feeding just along the road. We then went birding by foot and found many birds: Ultramarine Flycatcher, Lesser racket-tailed Drongo, White-bellied Green Pigeon flying over us, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Black-winged Cuckooshrike. Many woodpeckers were seen: Lesser and Greater Yellownape, Grey-headed and Crimson-breasted Woodpeckers. We had again good views of Giant Nuthatchs. As it was getting hot, we moved a bit further and found a good sunless and fresh place. Many birds were actively feeding along the road. We saw a few Himalayan Bluetails, Slaty-backed, Pale Blue, Sapphire and Rufous-gorgeted Flycatchers, Brown Prinia, Buff-barred Warbler, Grey-headed Parrotbill, Siberian Rubythroat. On the way down towards the foothill, we saw Chestnut-capped Babbler, Chinese Pond-Heron, Black-headed Bulbul and Asian Fairy Bluebird. We settled up the camp just before the first checkpoint of Doi Lang. 

Day 8 (27.12.14): Doi Lang
Early morning at the campsite on the foothill of Doi Lang, we had flight views of Mountain Scops Owl after having heard it singing during the whole night. Then we went up towards Doi Lang, stopping along the road inside the forest. The first stop was done in a kind of clearing in the middle of the forest, just along the main road. It produced Greater racket-tailed Drongo, Bay Woodpecker, Red-headed Trogon, Collared Owlet and Grey-breasted Martin. We continued on the road and arrived on a bridge over the canopy. From this bridge we had flight views of Little Cuckoo Dove, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon and a flock of Whiskered Yuhinas. We also heard some calls of Long-tailed Broadbills, which we couldn’t see for the moment. We continued on the same road, arriving in some fields, where a few Grey-faced Buzzard were sitting on the top of tall trees. We also saw there 2 Lesser Coucals. Par told us that this area sometimes hold Jerdon’s Bushchat but we couldn’t find any.
We went up towards the final checkpoint, where the access by car is restricted. At this checkpoint we had good views of Scarlet-faced Liocichla. We went by foot further on the road and found many birds: Black-eared Shrike Babbler, Grey-bellied Tesia, a male Red-flanked Bluetail, Yellow-vented Warblers, 2 immature Rufous-bellied Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Emerald Dove and Hume’s Treecreeper.
At the end of the afternoon, we went down the hills. We did a quick stop at the bridge and this time had distant views of a few Long-tailed Broadbills and Greater Flameback. After this, a Mountain Bamboo Partridge crossed the road just in front of our car. We went back to the campsite, where we saw our last new species for the trip of the day: White-rumped Shama. A Collared Scops Owl was singing but a bit to far to find it.

Day 9 (28.12.14): Foothill Doi Lang and travell to Chiang Saen Lake
Around the campsite in the morning we saw Common Iora and an Eurasian Sparrowhawk. After this we went down and birded the foothill area of Doi Lang, along the Tha Ton river, where we found Wryneck, Racket-tailed Treepie and 2 Richard’s Pipit with Paddyfield Pipits.
After breakfast we started the journey towards the Chiang Saen Lake. We set up the campsite by midday along the northern end of the Chiang Saen Lake. There we met some birders who told us that the first ever Firethroat for Thailand has just been found in a private reserve close to the lake. We decided to try it on the next day. From this viewpoint we found quickly 2 Great crested Grebes, apparently 4th record for Thailand. We also had flight views of Eastern Marsh Harrier. A quick walk in the area produced Indian Spot-billed Duck, Burmese Shrike, Black-browed Reed Warbler, Plaintive Cuckoo, Lineated Barbets and White-rumped Munia.
In late afternoon we decided to go to the Pied Harrier roost located south-west of the lake. On the way we already saw 1 male Pied Harrier. In the roost area we found Citrine Wagtails, Striated Grassbirds, Asian Openbills, Great, Little, Intermediate, Purple and Grey Heron.
At around 5pm. begun the crazy arrival of Pied Harrier. We saw during the evening more than 100 of this beautifull raptor, sometimes sitting a few meters only in front of the hide! We found with these harriers a female Hen Harrier and a few Eastern Marsh Harriers. A team trapped and ringed a few of these Harriers, including several male Pied. They also trapped an Eastern Grass Owl, quite distinctive from Barn Owl.
During the evening we went along the Mekong river to have diner and had flight views of Barn Owl with its typical calls.

Day 10 (29.12.14): Chiang Saen Lake and 7 hours travell to Mae Wong National Park
We spent the first hour around the campsite, finding a Baillon’s Crake and Brown-cheeked Rail. After this we went to the Nam Kham Nature Reserve to try the Firethroat. We went directly to the spot and after waiting for 2 minuts, the bird appeared just in front of us! A male Firethroat in winter plumage, the first ever for Thailand. We also had views at the same spot of Siberian Rubythroat. Other birds seen in the reserve: Paddyfield Warbler (trapped by the ringing team), 2 Jerdon’s Bushchat (1 male in field and 1 female ringed by ringing team), many Painted Snipes, a Common Snipe, Red Adavats, a Great Bittern and 2 Manchurian Bush Warblers.
We went birding then along the Mekong River, where we found 2 River Lapwings and a Pied Kingfisher. We also heard Yellow-bellied Prinia.
Back at the lake, we flushed several times a Pintail Snipe. We also saw Ferruginous Pochard, Northern Pintail and other common ducks. In bushes we saw Hainan Blue Flycatcher, Two-barred Warbler.
We left the Chiang Saen area at 5pm to go to the Mae Wong National Park. We arrived there at 2am the next morning and slept in the car.

Day 11 (30.12.14): Mae Wong National Park
In the morning over the first campsite we had flight views of Oriental Pied Hornbills and Brown-backed Needletail. We birded by foot after the first checkpoint (who’s opening only after 9am) and found following birds along the road: White-crested Laughingthrush, Ashy and Swinhoe’s Minivet, Great Iora, Crested Serpent Eagle.
We arrived at 10am at the Kun Yen campsite, where we will camp the following night. The ranger of the national park came directly to us, telling us that a strange bird is sitting in bushes just on the other side of the camping. We went there, looked in the high grass and found a Wood Snipe! The bird was sitting and feeding in high grass near the campsite. It stayed there for 1 hour, before being flushed by other people. It is apparently only the 4th record of this rare himalayan breeder.
We went up the road towards the third and last campsite. On the road, we did a stop at a hide to try to see the Rusty-naped Pitta, which we saw after 2 hours. At this same spot we had Spot-necked and Grey-throated Babbler, Streaked Wren Babbler, Rufous-browed and Dark-sided Flycatcher, Striated Yuhina, White-necked and Black-throated Laughingthrush. We heard 3 White-crowned Forktail deep inside the forest but couldn’t find any.
At the third campsite we went into the forest following a trail. We heard a Blue Pitta there and saw Silver-eared Mesia and many warblers. We then went down in the forest at the ranger station and sitted quietly for 2 hours. During this time, birds came feeding at the feeding station. We saw Grey Peacock-Pheasant and Rufous-throated Partridge at really close range.
In the evening, we went owl-watching around our camping (the middle one) and had very good views of Brown Wood Owl.

Day 12 (31.12.14): Mae Wong and evening at Huai Kha Kaeng wildlife sanctuary (HKK)
We spent the first 3 hours in the forest near the campsite. We had there good views of a curious Blue Pitta and brief views of a Scaly Thrush. A skulking Asian Stubtail gave also good views and a Hodgson’s Hawk Cuckoo flew directly in front of us.
We went after this again to the feeding spot along the road. We had nice views in the big trees bording the road of a flock of Burmese Yuhina.
At 11.30am we left the national park in direction of the Huai Kha Kaeng wildlife sanctuary. On the way we saw a pale morph Booted Eagle, Eastern Jungle Crow, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Black-winged Stilt and a few Grey-headed Lapwing in ricefields.
We spent the evening in HKK, finding Orange-breasted Trogon, Common Flameback, Orange-headed Thrush, Pied Fantail, Puff-throated Babbler, Red-breasted Parakeet, Black-hooded Oriole, Common Woodshrike, a flock of 10 Black-headed Woodpecker (what a nice Woodpecker!). We flushed a big flock of Red Junglefowl and had amazing flight views of male Green Peafowl.
We settled up the camp just after the checkpoint to enter the sanctuary. During the evening we had beathtaking views of Brown Boobook, Collared Scops Owl, Asian Barred Owlet.

Day 13 (01.01.15): Huai Kha Kaeng and travell to Khao Yai National Park
The morning was spent inside the sanctuary. We first went to the Green Peafowl birdwatching tower, where we saw Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Rufous Treepie, Burmese Shrike and many others. 5 Green Peafowl were feeding the whole time just in front of us, a male was also displaying during long minuts. We then went birding along the road, where we found the rare and localised White-bellied Woodpecker, Laced Woodpecker, Changeable Hawk Eagle and Chestnut-headed Bee-eater. We left the park at 11am to travel towards Khao Yai, where we arrived at 5pm.
Khao Yai was really full of tourists at this time of year (the most popular camping destination of Thaïland). It was almost impossible to bird along the road. We camped inside the park for the following 2 nights.
In the evening we saw Hill Myna, Blue-eared Kingfisher. We flushed 3 times a Lanceolated Warbler, 1m away from the main road! During the evening we saw sitting 20m from us Large-tailed Nightjar.
At night, we went by car along the road to try to find some good nocturnal birds. Many lighting cars are organised by the National Park and it was quite easy to find good birds. We had very good views of a sitting Brown Fish Owl.

Day 14 (02.01.15): Khao Yai National Park
At first light we went by foot along the road. Not far from the campsite we had flight views of Great Eared Nightjar. At dawn we found 2 Dollarbirds and Great Hornbills. The morning was spent searching for difficult birds like Pheasants, Pittas, Ground-Cuckoo, etc. First we went by car slowly along the road towards the mountain, where we had good views of several Siamese Fireback but nothing else really exciting.
We then went for birding inside a forest trail, a bit down the road. We tried to find Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo, Eared Pitta and Banded Kingfisher but nothing showed up. Suddently, after 30 minuts, just in front of us, a whole tree was moving. Immediatly, the guide gets allerted and told to us: elephant!! We quickly went down the trail, trying to recede as much as possible from the beast. The only new bird during this long trail was Dark-necked Tailorbird.
We went birding around the visitor center, which was full of tourist. We found there a male Mugimaki Flycatcher and Vernal Hanging Parrot. Then we went inside again another trail, which was much bether than the first one. We had good views of Eurasian Woodcock, Abbott’s Babbler, Plain-backed Sparrow and Richard’s Pipit. We spotted inside a forest a strange-looking flycatcher: a female Asian Paradise Flycatcher! Chris maybe saw also a male, but too briefly and only in flight. We went birding in open areas for the afternoon, where we saw several Sultan Tits.
After this we went birding behind the toilets of the Pha Kluai Mai Camping. We met there a photographer who told us that Blue Pitta is showing well and that in the morning, the Coral-billed Ground-Cuckoo (our ultimate Khao Yai target!!) is feeding around. We decided to take Par’s hide and to stay there for the rest of the day. We had indeed good views of Blue Pitta, but no Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo! Other birds showing around were Orange-headed Thrushs, Siberian Blue Robins. We also had close views of a Plain-tailed Warbler. As the Ground-Cuckoo didn’t showed, we decided to try again to stay in the hide on the next morning.
During the evening we had good views of Great Eared Nightjar and Brown Fish Owl (same spot as yesterday, along the main road of the park in a clearing).

Day 15 (03.01.15): Khao Yai, Mangrove forest south of Bangkok and Par’s farm in Phetchaburi
We went at dawn behind the toilets as yesterday evening, to try to see the extreme localised and skulking Coral-Billed Ground Cuckoo. We went into the tent (our guide’s hide). Probably the most unexpected moment of the trip happened: after only 1 minut, we noticed a bird moving on the ground behind bushes. We put our binoculars on it: GROUND CUCKOO!!! The bird appeared for at 07.30am first 30 seconds, always hiding behind bushes and dead branches. We then waited for the next 2 hours to see it again. It appeared a second time at 09.30am, in similar conditions, always hiding. But we were very close of it and had very good views. A dream came true!
After this, we went birding around in open area, where we saw Yellow-vented Flowerpecker, many Red Junglefowls, White-throated Rock Thrush and Bright-headed Cisticola.
We then moved outside the park towards Bangkok, where we arrived in the middle of the afternoon. We first went to the Wat Chong Long temple to look for Germain’s Swiftlet breeding inside the temple. We then moved towards the Mahachai mangrove forest, where we saw Collared Kingfisher, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Brahminy Kite, Brown-hooded Gull, White-winged and Whiskered Terns, Red-necked and Long-toed Stints, Pacific Golden Plover, Indian and Little Cormorants, Yellow-bellied Prinia, a pair Ruddy-breasted Crakes, White-winged Starlings, Stork-billed Kingfisher.
We then went to Par’s farm for the evening. We had close views of sitting Indian Nightjars and Barn Owl.

Day 16 (04.01.15): Ban Pak Thale, Phetchaburi and travel to Kaeng Krachan
We began the day at Ban Pak Thale to search Spoon-billed Sandpiper, one of the main purposes of our trip! We arrived at the spot at the same time than 2 other birdwatching groups. We found directly a big Red-necked Stint/Sanderling/Phalarope flock, where we searched for only 10 minuts before finding 2 Spoon-billed! It was a dream since we were childs, I don’t have to tell you the emotion we had at this moment! Another dream came true this morning. Birding in Thailand is really amazing.
We spent the morning in birding the area of Petchaburi, finding many good birds like Asian Dowitcher (a flock of 10+ birds), Nordmann’s Greenshank (a flock of 74 birds), Black-naped, Great Crested, Lesser Crested, Common, Caspian and Dougall’s Tern, Far Eastern Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Pacific Reef Heron.
After midday we went birding the freshwater area of Phetchaburi, finding Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Baya Weaver, 3 Red-throated Pipits, Cinnamon Bittern, Black-headed Ibis, Purple Swamphen and many others.
We then moved towards Kaeng Krachan, where we spent the last days of our trip. In the evening we already saw some good birds like Black-and-buff Woodpecker, Moustached Barbets, Thick-billed Green Pigeon, Crimson Sunbird and Grey-rumped Treeswift.

Day 17 (05.01.15): Kaeng Krachan National Park
We woke up early and spent the first 30 minuts around the campsite (the first campsite of the park). We saw there Buff-vented Bulbul, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, Greater necklaced Laughingthrush and a flying Yellow-vented Green Pigeon. After this, we spent the whole morning birding along the road down the campsite. We took the road going down towards the bottom of the national park and did many stops at clearings. We saw there Green-eared Barbet, Heart-spotted, Black-and-Buff, Bamboo and Streak-breasted Woodpeckers, Sultan Tits, a pair of Black-tighted Falconet directly over the main road, Lesser Cuckooshrike, Plain and Ruby-cheeked Sunbirds. 1km under the campsite, we had good views of a pair Black-and-red Broadbill. We had lunch at the restaurant of our campsite.
The afternoon was spent along the road, going up this time from the campsite. Many streams are crossing the road in the firsts 2 kms of the road and we walked this portion of the national park. First, we heard at 1 km up from the campsite Grey Peacock-Pheasant and Scaly-breasted Partridges, deep in the forest. We birded the road and saw Chestnut-bellied Malkoha, Large Woodshrikes, Ochraceous Bulbuls, a male Violet Cuckoo, a flying Jerdon’s Baza, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Lesser Green Leafbird and Yellow-eared Spiderhunter. Then we drove again towards the campsite, hanging at the car, and suddently a typical call was heard above us. Par directly shouted Green Broadbill! Extremely difficult to find in this national park. Saddly, we couldn’t find the bird anymore and heard it only once. Other birding groups also heard it at the same place this day.
We birded again the road down from the campsite and this time we could find a small flock of the beautifull Black-and-yellow Broadbill (the 500th species for our trip!). We also saw a Mountain Hawk-Eagle as well as a Black-tighed Falconet.
We went by night on the road to try to find some owls but couldn’t find anything else than Great Eared Nightjar.

Day 18 (06.01.15): Kaeng Krachan National Park
Directly after breakfast, we went up towards the highest parts of the national park to search for our main targets. First stop was done maybe 4-5km from the campsite, where we had a huge view on a big part of the national park. From this point we had flight views of a female Wreathed Hornbill. We did some others stops on the road, finding Buff-rumped Woodpecker and Long-tailed Broadbill. Then we went to the best spot for Ratchet-tailed Treepie, a forest with deep bamboo basin. We found there a big flock of White-hooded Babbler. Usually, the Treepie can be found feeding together with these Babblers deep in bushes, but in this flock we didn’t find anything else than Black-throated Laughingthrush. We birded the area for a while, finding Great Hornbills and Yellow-bellied Warblers. After this we went 1km up and found again a quite large mix flock with White-hooded Babbler. We first only heard many times in this flock Ratchet-tailed Treepie. We waited 20 minuts and finally had good but brief views of the Treepie! What a tail.
We then went up at the second campsite. We birded for midday around the campsite (where we had lunch) and saw Little Cuckoo Dove feeding on a fruiting tree together with Blue-eared and Great Barbets. We also saw there Great Green Leafbird and Par heard again a Ratchet-tailed Treepie, far away inside the forest.
After lunch we continued on the road towards its end, doing many stops. At the first stop we saw there 5 Dusky Broadbills and Crimson-winged Woodpecker. We did the second stop where we had very good and close views of Red-bearded Bee-eater. The last stop was done at the end of the road, where we saw Banded Broadbills and again Red-beared Bee-eater.
We went back at the second campsite and saw Everett’s White-eye. We flushed by car a Blue Pitta!
We spent the evening along the road. Suddently, we heard a singing White-fronted Scops Owl along a stream. We spent 30 minutes searching for it and finally we found it sitting and singing quite close! A very nice Owl seen in perfect conditions! During this trip we saw 11 owl-species in similar conditions.
At the campsite we did a small tour around to search for mammals and we saw Masked Palm Civet and Large Indian Civet.

Day 19 (07.01.15): Travel to freshwater area and to Bangkok. Flight to Beijing.
After breakfast, we left the campsite and went down the road. We saw there Gold-crested Myna, Cinnamon Bittern, Dusky and Black-and-red Broadbills. We did a stop at the foothills of the national park, where we saw Scaly-breasted Partridge in cultivations, a Black Eagle circling high over the mountains, many Crested Honey Buzzards, Oriental Skylark in cultivations and Lesser and Greater necklaced Laughingthrush at a water point.
We then did a stop at the main office of the National Park. In the dry forest next to the office where we had good views of Forest Wagtail, quite difficult to find between the numerous dead leaves. After this stop, we did 2 hours driving to the next stop, a big freshwater area. We saw there Pied Kingfisher, White-browed Crake and about 100 Cotton Pygmy Goose. We went back at the Bangkok airport for our flight to Beijing and then to Switzerland.
