Gurney's Pitta conditions are near extinct from Klong Thom distric, Khao Norchuchi Krabi province in south Thailand. Due to deforestation, catch the bird, villagers to use forest areas traditionally more than 20 years until the present, with Gurney's Pitta Remaining in the field Klong Thom 2 pairs or less and in the nearby forest, about 6-8 pairs (* 1) scattered in the forest. It is very rare these days are extremely vulnerable to extinction.

Pre Day : 9th May Bangkok Thailand to Yangon Myanmar
I & KS departed from the Don Muang airport Thailand 19:30 hours, transfer by low cost airline Nok Air, takes 1 hr. To Yangon airport, Thiri waiting for us. Day 1 : 10th From Yangon fly to southern Myeik.

Day 2 : 11th Survey under high humid
Last night, we heard Indochinese Frogmouth (Javan Frogmouth) calling nearby, but with exhausted from traveling all day, we sleep early. Tonight, we intend that playback it Frogmouth come to photography
This morning saw the forest around the very rich. Also around here still cutting only biggest tree, but less than the outside(outside every tree is gone). As you read this, it sounds a loud chainsaw cutting trees. The survey consisted of me, KS, SG, Debris Soe Kham(SK) assistant of SG and interpreter Karen.

Today we intend to explore two different places by foot along the road in the forest.
This road is a separate line to the Karen village. And one split to the Thailand border. Hear Great Argus, White-handed Gibbon, Dusky Langur singing near and far.

After lunch We decided to walk back to camp to rest, not exploring because now the sun is very hot bird very quiet as well. At the camp, the best thing is to have a dip in the stream and rest but did not sleep well because the Red-bearded Bee-eater, Blue-eared Kingfisher nesting near a camp. It make us take a camera to photo them.
15:00 to 17:30 walk to survey again, all day not found or heard Gurney's Pitta, but other birds was good such as Black-and-Red Broadbill, Green Broadbill, Bamboo Woodpecker, Great-eared Nightjar, Brown Shrike, Tiger. Shrike, White-hooded Munia and etc.
Day 3 : 12th Discovery Lowland forest.
This morning aimed at village forces Karen to ask permission to enter the area surveyed birds. Although permission from the Forest Department of Myanmar. Indeed, they know since we drove across the river Tannathaiyi Two days before, they was radio and told each base before then. we can come to camp here because a great coordination of a team of Myanmar and the strong relationship of SG, LM with the locals here. Because they are often used to survey birds together
It takes 1 hr. By 4wd, on the way we stop exploring the Gurney's Pitta, the Plain-pouched Hornbill fly over huge masses of this species in Thailand were very difficult. After meet general of Karea army, he allow to enter his area for survey, That afternoon, we found the biggest low land forest at side of the village. The forest is similar to the Khao Norchuchi in Thailand, GPS Garmin told altitudes below sea level at -90, N 11*42'09.8” E099*10'39.3” Local guide said that he had seen Gurney's here in many time, KS instinct told him that right away. This is the home of the Gurney's Pitta certainly no doubt, sounds sing the same two pairs of Hooded Pitta around Crested Jay, Black-and-Red Broadbill, Pied Hornbill, Orange-breasted Trogon, Cream-vented Bulbul.
Although we have little hope that the season this month, Gurney's will not respond to sound on tape. But we gradually went wild inched deeper. There are footprints in the swamp large animals like the Asian Wild Elephant, Wild Boar, Darking Deer come down to drink, White-throated Kingfisher flies disappeared, No any respond or see a Gurney's.
A little before noon, we decided to get out of here. We go to another route to explore, but the car 4 wd. of us do not drive through deep mud. So back at the main camp.
Around four o'clock we return to explore the original route again. Local guide took us to the point where he find Gurney's many times. And it's true, as he said. We hear Territory call the Gurney's is far. For here also found good specie such as Crested Fireback, Rusty-napped Pitta, Large Flogmouth(sleeping place), Chestnust-capped Thrust, Himalayan Flamback and numerous other birds.
Day 4 : 13th Discovery the Gurney's Pitta
Today we explore the separation into two groups. The first to explore a new route on the GPS coordinates Moses provided. This group SG, KS, a local guide to go by bike.
The second group, including myself, SK, local guides to explore the low forest met yesterday again.
I spent half a day in lowland forest until near noon was not heard or seen, but have found many interesting bird species such as Maroon-breasted Philentoma, Banded Kingfisher, Babbler, Cream-vented Bulbul, Large-scimitar Babbler, Helmeted Hornbill. I believe that if I took the tourists to come here constantly. I can convince the villagers Karen and soldiers to help conserve forests and wildlife. Because they are earning more sustainable. Day 5 : 14th Amazing Forest
Today explore together using a motorcycle. We intend to explore another route deep into the forest. For four days ago We are happy with hearing Territory call of Gurney's in many spots, especially the male saw yesterday. Today, we hope may to take picture of them when it comes to hopping as same as yesterday.
We heading to east of the the forest, about 6 miles drive over mud car 4 wd. can not drive pass it yesterday. Early rainy season is more convenient to travel by motorcycle use.
We do not know who cut through the rich forest line. Local guides say that the road is long, almost to the borders of Thailand-Myanmar.
This road along the stream to see many species of birds that come to drink water or some bird species living along streams such as White-crowned Forktail, Black-and-Yellow Broadbill and many pair of Black-and-Red Broadbill(more than 50 pairs). Habitat similar Keang Krachan National park or Krung Ching in Thailand.
Arrived at a forest found a large area of forest villagers burned the forest to mobile plantation. Here KS hear territory call of Gurney's Pitta several times, voice came from forest edge are being burn, but they did not find bird.
In same area Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying over the forest, for this species in Thailand, it's a very rare bird species, KS can be recorded by camera immediately, for this species shows that this area must have the main river course because this species like perch on tall trees along the streams or the river medium above.
At the same time, he also heard several Plain-Pouched Hornbill in the distance. We look through the gap of the trees, Not to long time to try found hundreds of them standing live trees along the river across from us. This's Hornbill species in Thailand, I and KS have seen a few times in life. For me watching birds for 25 years, seen 2 times each in Hala-Bala forest, Thailand borders Malaysia only. We are excited rush for the recording both still images and video immediately. The frame count to 80 birds!! , for here also we heard Rufous-collared Kingfisher calling in Ratthan(plam) forest river.
It's really hot here during the day. Finished eating lunch I walked down to swimming in Ngawun Chaung river, everyone must think this, So follow me down to swim together, except SG to take care of our luggage on the riverbank.
Around afternoon return to camp, surveyed birds along the way, Heavy rain on the way back it's make the road slippery, sloppy muddy forest, Motorcycle control more difficult And throughout the afternoon, heavy rain was coming down and we can only sit in the camp. Dinner, we decided to change from the original survey plan to stay here more one night, move to explore the forest on the way back to Myeik town because there SG had been a survey in 2008 that he had found at least 10 pairs of Gurney's Pitta.
Day 6 : 15th Move to New Camp.
Today, we pack luggage to move to survey birds at Chaung Nao Biang Village, Mileage 82, N 11*37'42.5” E099*04'08.4” for one night. SG had the last survey three years ago. In each survey takes 45 day per a trip. SG told me he had a Gurney's very easy to call it out of the woods to show off the roadside villages !! .
About 1.30 hours reach the village. After lunch We set up a tent inside an abandon office lumber company located near the village. 15:00 We start to survey, use local people for navigator, Drive down to the south of the village about 1 km. car turn left onto the logging road out of the forest, car ran into a little, SG seemed shocked with the change of the original forest has become rubber plantation. Pass rubber plantations three years old. We did not mind too much but when the car ran over the hill, every one on car shocked than last. !
